The Great Challenge: 130 kilometers along the Via Francigena

Alongside the more accessible routes, the 130-kilometer “Grande Sfida” represents the event’s signature experience.

A route connecting Siena to Acquapendente, it annually attracts the most experienced hikers, ready to test their mettle along one of the most captivating stretches of the Via Francigena. This route passes through extraordinary landscapes and offers the unique thrill of walking uninterrupted between day and night.

More than a competition, it’s a challenge with oneself, capable of transforming every step into an experience of personal growth, discovery, and awareness.

An event also open to those who are new to the path

The 2026 edition continues to strengthen the opportunities dedicated to those who wish to approach the world of trekking and hiking for the first time.

An inclusive offering, designed to engage an ever-wider audience: from long-distance enthusiasts to groups and first-time hikers, offering routes suitable for different levels of fitness.

Ten years of promoting the territory and local communities

Born with the aim of promoting the Tuscan-Lazio section of the Via Francigena, the Walking Francigena Ultramarathon has grown over the years to become a project capable of connecting territories, local communities, and people from all over Italy and abroad.

A journey built thanks to the collaboration between local authorities, associations, volunteers, and operators who, over time, have helped showcase the Via Francigena as a place of encounter, hospitality, and discovery.

A journey through the most iconic landscapes of central Italy

The route crosses some of the most iconic landscapes of central Italy: from the Sienese hills to the dirt roads of the Val d’Arbia, passing through the Val d’Orcia and the territories on the border between Tuscany and Lazio.

The walk alternates between spectacular views to be enjoyed during the day and evocative stretches at night under the starry sky. Along the way, you’ll pass iconic towns such as Buonconvento, San Quirico d’Orcia, Bagno Vignoni, and Radicofani.

Shortly before arriving, participants pass through Trevinano and the Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve, heading towards Acquapendente, the traditional final point of the itinerary.
