Our journey began in late May from the port of Savona-Vado Ligure, aboard Corsica Ferries. An overnight crossing that turned into a true interlude of relaxation and pampering. On board, we lacked nothing: a signature dinner with a menu created by Michelin-starred chef Filippo Chiappini and the warm welcome of an extraordinary crew. We even had the privilege, thanks to Captain Salvatore Cavassa and Chief Purser Massimiliano di Canosa, of visiting the bridge and discovering the secrets of life on board. A special mention: if you’re traveling with your four-legged friends, they’re welcome here, thanks to dedicated pet-friendly cabins and a delicious welcome kit.

The adventure begins: the Customs Officers’ Path

We disembarked in Bastia at the crack of dawn and, refreshed by a hearty breakfast, reached Macinaggio in just 30 minutes by car (though public transport is excellent). The famous Sentier des Douaniers (Douaniers’ Path) begins on its golden beach.

The complete itinerary encompasses the entire “finger” of Corsica all the way to Centuri: a long but accessible route that offers breathtaking views. You’ll walk through pristine landscapes, pristine beaches where cows graze undisturbed, and majestic Genoese towers in perfect condition, silent witnesses to the five centuries of rule of the Republic of Genoa.

Extra tip: During the warmer months, don’t forget your swimsuit! A stop for a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters is a must.

The stages and numbers of the route

  • From Macinaggio to Barcaggio (3.5 hours): Walk along the east coast, with views stretching from Elba to Capraia, until you reach the village of Barcaggio. From here, you can admire the picturesque Giraglia Island, famous for its rare protected ecosystem, its 16th-century tower, and its historic regatta. (Note: During the summer months, it’s possible to return to Macinaggio by boat.)
  • From Barcaggio to Centuri (Another 5 hours – Total 8 hours and 30 minutes): After Barcaggio, turn onto the west coast. The arrival in Centuri is pure poetry. Here, among the tables of the village’s small restaurants, fresh seafood dishes and excellent Corsican wine will test your willpower to continue on!
  • The return: Once in Centuri, you can choose to return to Bastia by taxi or boat (reservations are highly recommended), or complete the loop on foot with a trek inland of about 16 km (540m of elevation gain, 4h 30′).
