As athletes use advanced techniques and equipment, such as fix-and-follow and ultralight portaledges, to free climb big walls, what were once multi-day expeditions are turning into ambitious one-day climbs. Patagonia’s new Free Wall Kit carries this ethic of

high-quality rest and efficiency in clothing and accessories, ensuring optimal recovery along the way for limitless climbing.

Patagonia Ambassadors in Action

Josh Wharton sulla Spider Web Wall

Patagonia Ambassador Josh Wharton, along with climbing partner Michael Larson and support from Zack Smith, ventured into Wyoming’s Bighorn Mountains, seeking a remote backcountry challenge. They managed to get a full alpine experience on Mixed Signals, a 1,000-foot route graded 5.13c, characterized by short windows of good weather and grass-filled cracks.

Lor Sabourin su Daedalus

When Patagonia Ambassador Lor Sabourin traveled to the “alpine wilderness” of northern Arizona to tackle two classics, Dickel’s Delight (5.13c) and Daedalus (5.13+), she knew it would take the best tactics to handle such demanding multi-pitch projects. This included employing both “hard” techniques, like hauling a pack or attempting crux moves on solo toprope, and “soft” tactics, like cultivating your mental toughness and feeling lucky just to be there.

Dörte Pietron in Madagascar

Patagonia Ambassador Dörte Pietron and her partner, Daniel Gebel, found some of the most beautiful routes in Madagascar, but with the worst possible safety conditions. After repeatedly failing on several lines due to rusty bolts or poorly placed anchors, they fell in love with Lalan’i Mpanjaka (8a+/5.13c). The name means “the king’s line” in Malagasy, and the pair did everything they could to ensure they had the best chance of success on the razor-sharp granite and impeccable moves that characterize this 11-pitch, 600-meter wall.
