Our Review
The 4outdoor editorial team had the opportunity to try out the Free Wall kit for the first time in September 2025 in Arco, on a couple of multi-pitch routes, in the company of the legendary Sean Villanueva o’Driscoll, other ambassadors and the legendary local Alpine Guide Gianni Bisson.
Every piece exudes functionality. The Patagonia Free Wall Pant is made from a lightweight yet extremely durable recycled softshell fabric that won’t chafe against rock, so you won’t have to worry about chafing your hips or knees. The regular fit and articulated design facilitate leg movement, complete with quick and effective waist and hem adjustments. Two large thigh pockets, plus a zippered back pocket, allow you to stash a few items without being hindered by a harness.
The Patagonia R1 Ultralight Hoody is as soft and comfortable as it is abrasion-resistant, thanks to the smooth recycled PE outer fabric, the hood fits perfectly under a climbing helmet and the deep chest zip allows you to put it on, open it and take it off easily even at the belay.
Patagonia Houdini Rock Jacket is the climbing version of Patagonia’s iconic Houdini. Light as a raincoat but durable thanks to its multi-thread Ripstop fabric, it packs into its chest pocket and can be clipped to a carabiner, always being within reach in case of a wind or light rain. The deep chest zipper makes it easy to put on and take off, the extra length keeps it from riding up on your hips when you reach for a distant handhold, and the hood with semi-stiff visor fits and adjusts perfectly over a helmet.
The Patagonia Durable Down Parka is the centerpiece of the Free Wall Kit, a down jacket with an 800-fill-power rating to keep you warm during longer stops. Patagonia used a lightweight version of the fabric used in its Workwear range, a recycled nylon/polyester hybrid ripstop that perfectly balances abrasion resistance and lightweight/compressibility. The quilting, shoulder design, and overall ergonomics maintain the jacket’s loft in any situation while avoiding annoying thermal bridges. The two-way front zipper (with a snap at the bottom) allows you to secure your jacket at a belay without having to open the entire jacket. The large internal mesh pockets allow you to stow shoes, fleece, or gloves, while the hood fits perfectly over a helmet, protecting your face from the wind.

Durable Down Parka
A warm and durable 800-fill down mountaineering jacket. Made with similar materials to the Patagonia Steel Forge work jacket, it’s tough enough to withstand the toughest routes, yet light enough to carry on longer routes. It features discontinuous quilting and an articulated ergonomic construction for maximum freedom of movement. The hood, cuffs, and hem are trimmed with thin elastic to fit over a helmet and hug the body. The two-way Vislon zipper with a snap at the bottom lets you secure a belay without opening the entire jacket. Broad shoulders and a tailored cut under the arms ensure maximum freedom of movement. Large internal bucket pockets allow for storage of ample gear.

Patagonia has transformed the iconic Houdini® Jacket into the ultimate climbing anorak, designed specifically for multi-pitch rock climbing. The wind- and weather-resistant Houdini® Rock Jacket offers exceptional freedom of movement over the head and an extra-long, snug fit that stays in place under a harness. The deep front zipper makes it easy to put on and take off the jacket and vent excess heat. The extra-roomy fit allows you to climb without sacrificing mobility. The chest pocket can hold small items or stow the jacket when not in use. Adjustable hood with semi-stiff brim and storm collar.
Fabric: 41-g 100% recycled nylon ripstop with a DWR finish (no intentionally added PFAS). Made in a Fair Trade Certified facility.

R1 Ultralight Hoody
The warm and breathable R1® Ultralight Hoody is a technical fleece and a big-wall essential for both professional athletes and serious climbers. It’s nearly as light as your favorite thermal base layer, with a smooth, abrasion-resistant outer fabric that won’t tear when exposed to sharp rock. The fit is slim yet long enough to tuck under a harness, with seamless shoulders for maximum freedom of movement. The cuffs, hem, and hood feature low-profile elastic. The wide front opening vents heat and allows for easy on and off without removing a helmet. Zippered chest pockets hold snacks or your phone.
Fabric: 156 g/m2 recycled PE with a smooth exterior and double weave. Made in a Fair Trade Certified facility.
