Here, summer is a mosaic of experiences, combining clear lakes, rugged mountains, villages steeped in history, and a natural setting that invites you to slow down or, conversely, venture a little further. From the shores of Lake Maggiore to the peaks of the Alta Val Formazza, passing through the authentic landscapes of the Ossola Valley, the region transforms into a gigantic open-air outdoor gym.

Scenic hikes, cycling itineraries, trail running, water sports, cultural events, and nature-filled festivals make up a calendar that can satisfy every type of traveler: from athletes to families, from adventure lovers to those simply looking for a place to reconnect with nature.

Trekking through canyons, alpine lakes, and ancient mountain paths

Summer is the perfect time to explore the trails that crisscross the Lake District. Among the most evocative itineraries are the Orridi di Uriezzo, spectacular canyons carved by glaciers thousands of years ago. Walking through these deep rock gorges is like taking a true journey through the geological history of the Alps, amidst cliffs reaching heights of up to thirty meters and otherworldly landscapes.

In the Bognanco Valley, the Giro dei Tre Rifugi (Three Refuges Tour) takes hikers on a circular route through larch forests, alpine peat bogs, pastures, and mountain lakes. This route partially follows the ancient Stockalper Route, a historic trade route between Italy and Switzerland, offering a perfect combination of nature, history, and high-altitude views.

For those traveling with children or seeking a more accessible hike, Lake Antrona is an ideal choice. The trail runs along the water’s edge, passing woods, suspended walkways, and the spectacular Sajont Waterfall, offering breathtaking views at every turn.

Cycling between lakes and mountains

Over the years, the Lake District has become a popular destination for cycling enthusiasts. The legendary climbs of Mottarone continue to attract cyclists from across Europe thanks to their views spanning the lakes and the Alps, while the gravel and mountain bike trails of the Ossola Valley allow you to immerse yourself in authentic and unspoiled valleys.

From the Isorno Valley to the historic trails of the Cadorna Line above Lake Maggiore, every ride tells a story of nature, culture, and Alpine memory.

A summer of sports including trail running, swimming, and motorsports.

The 2026 season kicks off with a packed calendar of sporting events. From the historic Intrasca Valley Marathon to the waters of Lake Orta hosting the Italian leg of Oceanman, to the thrills of the Rally Valli Ossolane.

There’s also great anticipation for the trail running events, with the BUT Formazza and the Monterosa EST Himalayan Trail, races that cross some of the most spectacular scenery in the Piedmont Alps, including alpine lakes, Walser villages, and high-altitude trails.

Festivals and shows under the stars

Summer in the Lake District isn’t just about sports. Between June and September, the area hosts some of Northern Italy’s most interesting cultural events.

The luminous fountains of Baveno and Feriolo d’Incanto transform the shores of Lake Maggiore into a watery stage, while Tones on the Stones celebrates twenty years of artistic cross-pollination in the extraordinary setting of the former Oira quarry.

Rounding out the program are the 65th edition of the Stresa Festival, an international reference for classical and contemporary music, and Malescorto, the festival that brings great short films to the heart of the Vigezzo Valley.

Crystal clear waters and iconic places

The area confirms the quality of its waters again in 2026 with four Blue Flags distributed between Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta.

Among the unmissable stops are the Cannero Castles, recently reopened to the public after extensive restoration, the Buccione Tower overlooking Lake Orta, and the majestic Toce Waterfall, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Europe at 143 meters high.

Adventure for the whole family

Those seeking thrills to share with children and teens will find a particularly rich offering. From suspended trails in the woods to the adventure parks of Mottarone, from outdoor activities on Lake Maggiore to ziplines traversing the Ossola valleys, the area offers experiences that combine fun, nature, and discovery.

Whether it’s soaring above a valley, riding a scenic bobsleigh track, or exploring trails immersed in the woods, summer in the Distretto Turistico dei Laghi confirms its vocation:

Dopo anni di Sci club, diventa maestra ed allenatrice di sci alpino e comincia a frequentare sempre di più le montagne che oggi sono casa. Sci alpinismo, alpinismo, trail running ed arrampicata sono le attività in cui spende ogni singola energia e, grazie alle quali, l’ha portata a scrivere ed a collaborare con le diverse aziende del settore outdoor.
