There is a season in which Vipiteno seems to rediscover an even more intimate dimension. It is autumn, when the woods of the Upper Isarco Valley progressively change color and the landscape lights up with shades that go from gold to red. The cooler temperatures and clear light of autumn days thus become the perfect opportunity to slow down and get to know the area through experiences that combine nature, culture and gastronomy.
Inserted among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, Vipiteno retains the character of an ancient medieval town, recognizable in the pastel-coloured facades, in the historic shops and cafés that enliven the centre. At this time of year the village also represents an excellent starting point for reaching the mountains. From the heart of Vipiteno, the Monte Cavallo cable car takes you to 1,860 meters in just a few minutes, opening up a panorama of the Stubai Alps, the Zillertal Alps, the Sarntal Alps and the Dolomites. The lift will remain operational until November 1st, while the Panorama Cable Car and the Panorama Mountain Coaster will be open until October 4th, allowing you to alternate moments immersed in nature with a dose of fun.
Between foliage and panoramas, discovering Monte Cavallo
From this altitude starts a network of paths capable of satisfying hikers with different preparations. One of the most evocative routes is the Dolomieu Trail, also known as the Six Malghe Route, which connects Monte Cavallo to Ladurns through pastures, larch woods and refuges. The route takes its name from the French geologist Déodat de Dolomieu and represents one of the most characteristic itineraries in the area. It can be tackled in its entirety or divided into individual stages, thus adapting the excursion to the time and level of preparation.
Excursions between mountain pastures, larch forests and via ferratas
The mountain experience also involves stops. Alpine huts and refuges become part of the route, offering the opportunity to taste traditional South Tyrolean specialties such as dumplings, Schlutzkrapfen, speck, cheeses and typical desserts. Various facilities remain open until the first days of November, creating the ideal combination of walking, landscape and local cuisine.
For those who prefer to test their technique and preparation, the Ölberg via ferrata, located at the entrance to the Val di Vizze, offers different levels of difficulty along an itinerary of 550 meters of length and 230 meters of difference in altitude. A route that adds a more adventurous component to the discovery of the area and offers broad views of the Vipiteno basin.
Flavors, traditions and events that tell the story of the territory
The South Tyrolean autumn does not only live in the colors of the woods, but also in the aromas and flavors that arrive on the tables. In Vipiteno this season coincides with the Törggelen, an ancient tradition linked to the grape harvest and harvest. After a day spent along the paths or in the streets of the historic center, refuges, inns and farms welcome guests with traditional recipes and new wine, renewing a gastronomic ritual that has belonged to the local culture for generations.
Among the main specialties of the period are Schlutzkrapfen, dumplings, barley soup, meat dishes accompanied by sauerkraut, Krapfen, roasted chestnuts, nuts and grapes. The name Törggelen comes from Torggl, the ancient wooden press used for pressing grapes. The tradition normally develops from September to the first days of November and involves numerous restaurants, farms and inns in the area.
Every Friday, until the end of October, Piazza Città also becomes the meeting point for the traditional Farmers’ Market. The local farms bring bread, cheeses, honey, wine, aromatic herbs, vegetables and other local products to their stalls. An opportunity to buy directly from the producers and, at the same time, come into contact with the agricultural heritage of the Upper Isarco Valley.
The autumn calendar is then enriched with numerous events dedicated to gastronomy and local traditions. The first is set for Sunday 13 September with the traditional Canederli Festival, one of the best-known gastronomic events in Alto Adige. For an entire day, the center of Vipiteno is transformed into a large outdoor table, with over seventy interpretations of the symbolic dish of South Tyrolean cuisine, accompanied by live music, folk groups and shows.
Among the events that characterize autumn, the Red Carpet also returns, scheduled for 19 and 26 September and 3 and 10 October. For four consecutive Saturdays the historic center comes alive thanks to extraordinary openings of boutiques, shops and shops, together with initiatives dedicated to shopping, culture and conviviality. All in the setting of the medieval porticoes and the Tower of the Twelve.
The calendar will close with the Harvest Festival, scheduled for 30 and 31 October. Piazza Città will host the traditional farmers’ market with honey, bread, cheeses, wines, vegetables and other local specialties, together with demonstrations of ancient crafts and moments dedicated to craftsmanship. A festival that fully interprets the spirit of autumn and tells of the profound relationship between the community of Vipiteno, its traditions and the territory.
An invitation to discover Vipiteno in a different light
From the views of Monte Cavallo to the paths that cross mountain pastures and larch forests, from the atmospheres of the medieval center to the flavors of the Törggelen, autumn allows you to observe Vipiteno from different perspectives. Nature, history and gastronomy meet in an area where the mountain is not just a backdrop, but an integral part of culture and daily life. And it is precisely this combination that makes Vipiteno an interesting destination even when summer is now behind us.
Then winter will come and the village will transform again. From November 27th the streets and squares will light up to welcome the traditional Christmas Market, among wooden houses, artisan products and gastronomic specialties. A new chapter of the most evocative season of the year, ready to take the place of the colors of autumn.
