After months of attempts, hundreds of applications and an impressive amount of theories, maps and diagrams arriving from all over the world, Expedition Impossible has officially come to an end. The mission launched by Columbia Sportswear did not produce the desired result: none of the aspiring explorers managed to locate the edge of the Earth. And so, at least for now, the keys to the company remain firmly in Columbia’s hands.

The conclusion of the initiative was marked by Tim Boyle, CEO of Columbia Sportswear, who was the protagonist of a final video dedicated to the entire expedition. In the film, Boyle retraces the stages of the operation, recognizes the commitment and inventiveness demonstrated by the participants, awards some prizes and officially closes the research.

“No one has found the edge of the Earth and I’m really relieved that we can keep the company,” commented Tim Boyle, CEO of Columbia Sportswear. «Expedition Impossible perfectly represented Columbia’s adventurous spirit. Many have attempted the feat and many have failed, but we appreciated the effort. Thanks also go to the flat earth community, who submitted a surprising number of proposals to us. Now that the initiative is over, I can’t wait to get back to work. And you can also stop sending us emails.”

The impact of Expedition Impossible wasn’t limited to audience response. In fact, the campaign won the largest number of awards at the 2026 Cannes Lions Festival, and then also became the most recognized initiative in the history of Columbia Sportswear. The list of awards was further enriched with the Grand Clio Award, the highest recognition awarded within the Clio Awards.

The closure of Expedition Impossible thus represents a further chapter of Engineered for Whatever, the advertising campaign with which Columbia has chosen to go furthest in the last decade. Launched on 4 August 2025, exactly one year before the end of the initiative, the campaign brought the brand’s typical irony, irreverence and safety back to the foreground, adapting them to the language and expectations of a new generation of consumers. But behind the irony, Columbia’s central message remains: products developed to guarantee resistance, innovation and performance in any condition. And, apparently, Engineered for Whatever still has something to tell.

* “Company” means The Company, LLC, a corporation with assets valued at $100,000. The “edge of the Earth”, however, must be interpreted in a literal sense: a real physical and visible extremity of the planet, imagined as an endless precipice, an infinite abyss or a point where the clouds fall towards nothingness. Not included in the definition are a clifftop in Seattle, a dead-end street in Kansas, or, of course, your friend Dave who chose to legally change his name to “The Edge.”
