All eyes are on Tenerife for the PWA World Cup, featuring 160 riders from 20 countries.
The opening of the Playa Surf Tenerife El Médano Windsurf Grand Slam 2025 took place on Friday, August 1st, with the official registration of competitors at the main event tent. The day continued with a colorful parade and an official presentation ceremony, enlivened by the vibrant rhythms of the batucada group Bloko del Valle.
Around 3,000 people gathered along the streets and main square of El Médano to welcome the 140 windsurfers from all over the world, who proudly marched waving their national flags.
Among the attendees were representatives from the Granadilla de Abona municipality and local surfers like María Morales, who shared her excitement: “I’m so happy that, once again, the Tenerife World Cup is being held here in El Médano. We’re truly fortunate to have one of the best places in the world to compete. We hope the wind and waves are on our side. It looks like the final days of the competition could bring some action, and the conditions should improve as the days go by.”
For Dimple Melwani, CEO of Turismo de Tenerife, “Tenerife is back on the international map thanks to this event, which is part of Tenerife Tourism’s strategy to unite tourism and sport. It highlights a very special part of our island, where windsurfing has become a major attraction. All this is possible thanks to a prestigious brand like the PWA.”
El Cabezo, in El Médano, is recognized worldwide for its exceptional windsurfing conditions and will be the stage where athletes from 20 countries, enthusiasts, locals, and visitors will gather to enjoy a true spectacle on the waves. “Furthermore, the event includes a sustainability plan, a key aspect we want to emphasize,” Melwani added.
Although the lack of wind prevented the competition from starting as originally scheduled for Saturday, the event continues with a full program of activities in the main tent, open to the public. Weather conditions are expected to improve throughout the week, allowing the competition to proceed fully.
