From Edelweiss to the Trenches: A Journey Through Time
Our hike begins at high altitude, easily reaching Sunny Valley via the ski lifts from Santa Caterina Valfurva (open from July to September 5th). From here, an easy 2 km trail will lead you to a true gem: the Edelweiss Cave, also known as “Cameraccia.”

This fascinating rock cavity, located at 2,500 meters at the foot of Mount Sobretta, is an incredible natural museum. For centuries, it served as a refuge for transhumance shepherds, and its walls hold hundreds of graffiti—names, dates, symbols—left by very young shepherds starting in 1722. A moving testimony to life and presence, now the subject of scientific studies and 3D digitization by the Stelvio National Park in collaboration with the University of Bergamo.

But the journey doesn’t end there. Our circular route continues from the cave towards the Valle dell’Alpe. Here, the air is steeped in history: you’ll find yourself immersed in a landscape that still bears the indelible marks of the Great War. You’ll explore the remains of well-preserved trenches, stretches of rusty barbed wire, and tunnels hidden among the rocks and pastures. They are silent testimonies to a conflict that left a profound mark on these mountains. Walking here means treading through history, reflecting on the past, and admiring the resilience of nature that has reclaimed these places.

Breathtaking views and unexpected encounters
As you retrace these ancient paths, you’ll be constantly surrounded by a majestic setting. The view opens onto breathtaking panoramas, stretching from the imposing peaks of the Ortles-Cevedale mountain range to the horizon. The pure air, the silence broken only by the whistle of marmots or the rustle of the wind, make the experience unique.
The Alpe Valley and the surrounding area of Sobretta are a true sanctuary for the wildlife of the Stelvio National Park. With a little luck, you might spot ibex climbing the rock faces, agile chamois, foxes, and the ever-present marmots that populate the Alpine pastures. And with a bit of luck, you might even glimpse the imposing silhouette of the bearded vulture, dominating the skies with its majestic wingspan. Don’t forget your camera to capture not only the historical remains, but also the extraordinary alpine flora and the enchanting Laghetto dell’Alpe and Laghetto del Sobretta, crystal-clear lakes nestled in a pristine landscape.
