PWA Tenerife, updates for the first 5 days of competition.
Already 5 days of competition in Tenerife and so far very little has been achieved: only 4 Slalom X boards (and there are only 20 riders), and yesterday thanks to a little more condition the first round of the wave board took place.
After a couple of days of Slalom X, day five of the Playa Surf CBbC Hotel Tenerife El Médano Windsurf Grand Slam 2025 saw the men’s wave fleet take to the water for the first time this week, completing the first round of the Single Elimination in relatively challenging conditions. However, the world’s best wave riders still managed to create some moments of magic, leaving only the top 32 men standing after having 16 minutes to connect their two best waves and land their best jump.

Adam Warchol (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing / MFC) set the highest score of the day in run five, totaling 18.47 points after landing the highest single-wave score of the day—7 points—and also landing the third-highest jump of the day—5.73 points for a backloop—allowing him to easily advance. Meanwhile, Jochen Stolz (Bruch Boards / Simmer Sails) made the most of his knowledge of the area, earning the third-highest score of the day and deservedly advancing.
Elsewhere, Arthur Arutkin (Flikka / GUNSAILS / Black Project Fins) took part in the first heat of the day, and the Frenchman secured his spot in the next round with the second-highest score of the day—16.64 points—thanks to two solid wave scores that did much of the damage. Laurin Schmuth (Goya Windsurfing / MFC) secured the other qualifying spot, edging out Simon Thule (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails) and Finn Mellon (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing).
Moritz Mauch (Simmer / Simmer Sails) once again excelled in wave riding, with his vertical and dynamic approach well received by the judges. The 29-year-old matched Warchol’s seven points, splitting the highest single wave of the day and winning heat six ahead of Henri Kolberg (Naish / Naish Sails / Maui Ultra Fins), who landed a near-planing backloop to deny Lucas Meldrum (Duotone Windsurfing) a spot in the next round.
Anton Richter (JP / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) managed to prevail in a close second heat, winning the heat ahead of Tim van Dam Sanchidrian (Bruch Boards / Bruch Sails), who also qualified after edging out Baptiste Cloarec (RRD / RRD Sails) by just 0.13 points to place himself in the round of 32. The Spaniard’s opening wave – 6.66 points – proved decisive, despite Cloarec landing a no-handed backloop.
In the third heat, Mike Friedl (Goya Windsurfing), who had achieved his first top ten finish in Gran Canaria last month, qualified for the next round with a 5.87-point backloop – the highest-scoring jump of the day – while Hayata Ishii (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing / MFC) secured the other qualifying position.
In the other three heats of the first round, Alessio Stillrich (Bruch Boards / Bruch Sails) won the fourth heat, edging out local youngster Walter Costanzo (JP / NeilPryde), who also qualified. Seventeen-year-old Ryu Noguchi (Starboard / Severne Sails) and 20-year-old Esteban de Cruz (Goya Windsurfing) are two of the youngest sailors to break into the top 32 after making it through the seventh heat, while Jules Denel (Tabou / GA Sails) made no mistakes in the seventh heat, comfortably winning against reigning Masters World Champion Mike Friedl (Goya Windsurfing).
The forecast for tomorrow isn’t rosy, with winds between 10 and 16 knots, but some locals believe the wind could still be good, so we’ll just have to wait and see. The Wave fleet’s skipper’s meeting will be held Wednesday morning at 10:00 (GMT+1), with a possible first start at 11:00, while the Slalom X fleet will again hold its skipper’s meeting at 12:00, with a possible first start at 13:00.
