Following the success of last year’s Mobility Month, POW Italy — a nonprofit organization committed to climate activism—is once again dedicating the month of October to a collective reflection on the environmental impact of our outdoor sports travel. How? By sharing the experiences of those who have already chosen sustainable mobility and inviting the community to participate in a new dedicated survey.

Mobility Month 2024 data: cars dominate, but demand for sustainable alternatives is growing.

The 500 responses collected in 2024 by the Science Alliance di POW Italy (the network of scientists and scholars from various fields) highlighted a clear fact: the car remains the most popular means of transport for reaching outdoor sports venues, a true paradox for nature lovers. While cultural habits and practices of convenience prevail, the lack of infrastructure capable of making low-emission alternatives truly accessible emerges.

Five key insights from the survey

(Full report available here):

  • The car remains dominant, especially in peripheral and internal areas.
  • Flexibility and load capacity are the main reasons for the choice.
  • 30 km/h zones and cycle paths are widely supported.
  • Integrated transport (bikes on trains or buses) is seen as a decisive factor.
  • Low frequency and coverage of public transport remain significant obstacles.

Sustainable travel is possible: bike, train, and creativity

Riding a cargo bike with climbing gear or taking the train to reach the starting point of a trek are just some of the possible alternatives to the car. Through the stories of three outdoor enthusiasts, POW Italy aims to demonstrate that choosing low-emission mobility is a concrete decision, reducing environmental impact and allowing us to experience sports more consciously and respectfully for the places we love.

POW Italy’s goal is to shift the focus from individual sacrifice to collective responsibility: protecting the places that inspire us also means rethinking how we reach them. Highlighting the critical issues of high-emission transportation—from parking stress to hidden costs and time wasted in traffic—helps build new narratives and promote cultural and, ultimately, systemic change.

Share your experience and be part of the change

POW Italy’s Mobility Month is your chance to contribute firsthand by sharing how you travel to the places where you practice your favorite sport. By participating in the survey, your data will be included in a collective analysis of the outdoor community’s mobility habits and needs.

The goal? To change the system.

Transportation is one of the main sources of emissions fueling the climate crisis, putting at risk the places we love and where we live our passions.
Take the survey and become an active part of the change.
