The Interview

Hi Andrew, welcome to the team! How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m Andrew, 25 years old, born and raised in Cumbuco, Brazil, one of the most iconic kitesurfing spots in the world. With its constant trade winds and an ocean lifestyle rooted in the local culture, Cumbuco was the perfect playground for my development as a waterman. My home spot is where it all began, and even today, nothing beats a great session there.

What was your journey into boardsports?

My journey into boardsports began early. I was always in the water surfing, bodyboarding, sailing—anything I could get my hands on. But when I discovered kitesurfing as a teenager, everything changed. The feeling of speed, power, and total freedom immediately captivated me. Since then, I’ve spent years surfing all over the world, from Europe to Asia, to the Caribbean, chasing the wind, discovering new spots, and improving my surfing technique in waves and big air.

What is your relationship with competition?

Competition has played an important role in my development, especially in freestyle and big air. I’ve participated in some local competitions in Brazil. They’ve helped me develop mental focus and consistency in my performance, but more than anything, competition keeps me focused and motivated to grow. However, I also find joy in progressing during daily sessions and sharing these moments with other riders. I’ll continue to push myself beyond my limits, and who knows, maybe I’ll reach the podium in the future.

What kind of sessions motivate you at the moment?

These days, I’m particularly motivated by strong wind sessions, which are ideal for big air, kite loops, and exploring new rotations. I’m always experimenting with new trick variations and love the technical aspect of perfecting my control in flight. On lighter days, I enjoy surfing and foiling, both for fun and to understand how different equipment performs in different disciplines. I firmly believe in versatility.

What inspired you to join the GONG team?

What attracted me to the GONG team was the brand’s vision. GONG stands out for its dedication to innovation, its accessible yet high-performance gear, and a team that truly lives and breathes the sport. I love how the brand isn’t afraid to try new things, push boundaries, and rethink what gear can be. Joining the team feels natural, and I can’t wait to bring energy to content creation, gear testing, and community building.

Which GONG gear excites you the most?

Right now, I’m particularly excited about GONG’s Ayto Aramid DP, specifically designed for big air. This kite’s hang time is absolutely incredible, perfect for improving my skills. I can’t wait to test them in real conditions and test their responsiveness, lift, and stability. I’m also very interested in GONG’s twin tips, foils, and surfboards. The balance between weight, flex, and shape is crucial to my riding style, and I can’t wait to delve into this aspect of the kite as well.

What’s your next kitesurfing trip or project?

My next trip is to Brazil, where I’ll be kitesurfing and filming at some of my favorite spots, as well as surfing along the coast. I’m planning a project focused on both progression and adventure, highlighting my home kitesurfing locations, testing new gear, and sharing the excitement with the global kitesurfing community.

A huge thank you to the GONG team for the warm welcome. I’m proud to be a part of it and can’t wait to see where this journey will take us!
