When it comes to trekking and outdoor activities, poles are an indispensable ally for tackling trails, elevation changes, and long hikes with greater stability and safety. But how much do we really know about the material they’re made of? Cober, a historic Italian brand specializing in pole production since 1953, has built its reputation by focusing on aluminum, a material that combines lightness, strength, and sustainability.

Here are ten interesting facts about aluminum that will make you look good on your next excursion.

1. Aluminum is everywhere

It’s the third most common element in the Earth’s crust after oxygen and silicon, and the most common metal in nature. Atomic number 13… but don’t worry, it’s not bad luck!

2. It was once the “metal of kings”

In the 19th century, aluminum was more precious than gold. Napoleon III displayed aluminum cutlery to impress his most illustrious guests, including the King of Siam.

3. Infinitely recyclable

Aluminum can be recycled infinitely without losing its properties. What’s more, producing one kilo of recycled aluminum requires 20 times less energy than primary production.

4. Lightweight yet durable

At the same volume, it weighs one-third that of copper and steel. It’s no coincidence that much of the Space Shuttle, airplanes, and bicycles are made of aluminum to reduce weight without sacrificing strength.

5. It is extracted from bauxite

Pure aluminum doesn’t exist in nature. It comes from bauxite, a red or yellow rock that contains up to 60% aluminum.

6. Recycling is an ecological act

To produce one ton of primary aluminum, four tons of bauxite are needed, producing waste such as red mud, which is toxic to the environment. This is why recycling is so important.

7. It is not afraid of corrosion

In contact with air it spontaneously forms a protective layer that makes it highly resistant to atmospheric agents, perfect for outdoor use.

8. It is used in alloy

Pure iron would be too soft. It is combined with copper, zinc, magnesium, and other elements to obtain lightweight alloys with specific mechanical properties.

9. High-end alloys

The Ergal 7075 alloy, also used in the aeronautical sector, is the most resistant: we find it in bicycle frames, windsurfing booms and the best trekking poles.

10. More sustainable sticks

A pole that lasts longer is more sustainable. Cober uses only premium alloys like 5083 and 7075, with a recycled aluminum content of between 53 and 85% and a short, entirely Italian supply chain.

Cober: Italian tradition and sustainable innovation

“Aluminum is kind of our specialty,” says Alice Covini, global sales manager and the third generation of the family to run the company. “It’s reliable, infinitely recyclable, and perfect for hiking poles. Plus, our supply chain is entirely Italian, from production to tempering, which reduces our environmental impact.”

The top of the range: Tamus, Rubus and Magma

For the most demanding trekkers, Cober offers the Tamus, Rubus, and Magma models, made of Ergal 7075. Lightweight yet extremely durable, they fold into four sections, taking up minimal space in your backpack. The ergonomic Cosmonaut handle allows for a natural grip at different heights, while the CamLock closure system ensures quick and secure adjustments.

A perfect balance between compact design, performance and durability, for those looking for a reliable travel companion on every trail.
