Daida Moreno returns to dream and takes the 23rd Pozo title, while Philip Köster takes the title of event #8 in one of the windiest Pozos ever
Pozo Izquierdo is known as the “House of Wind,” and over the past nine days, it lived up to its reputation. The opening two days saw perhaps the windiest competition ever in Gran Canaria, with several sailors saying the wind was on par with some Red Bull Storm Chase missions. The final weekend saw more nuclear winds, capping off another fantastic edition of the Gran Canaria Gloria Windsurf World Cup. Results were achieved in all 10 divisions, capping an extremely challenging but also highly successful event, where windsurfing was able to showcase itself as the wonderfully dynamic sport it is.
Wave
Women
Daida Moreno (Bruch Boards / Bruch Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) made a surprise return to competition this year after announcing her retirement from competition in 2023. However, the result had a sense of regularity: the 47-year-old dug deep in the final seconds of the Super Final to deny Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) the victory. Daida continues her love affair with Pozo Izquierdo and has just captured her 23rd title of the event. Moreno has been known for her aerial prowess throughout her long and illustrious career, so perhaps it’s no surprise that she earned the highest score of the event—7.10 points—for a massive forward stall.
After coming so close to victory but failing to do so, it will still be a bitter pill for Offringa to swallow, having come so close to achieving her long-term goal of defeating Moreno on home soil. The reigning world champion can still take heart from her strong performance in the final against Moreno, which forced her to compete in a Super Final, while in the grand scheme of things, second place still represents a solid result in her quest for a fifth consecutive wave world title.
Alexia Kiefer Quintana (Duotone Windsurfing) managed to keep her podium streak going after climbing one place in the Double Elimination after defeating Sol Degrieck (Severne / Severne Sails). The 20-year-old has now podiumed at his last six events in a run stretching back to Chile in 2024.
Meanwhile, Degrieck just misses out on the podium, but still earns her best result to date in Pozo – 4th – while she also finishes the event with the highest scoring heat of the contest – 24 points – in the Single Elimination when she landed pushloops, frontside airs and a taka, while even trying a double forward to show that even at 15-years-old she’s now a major threat for the very top positions.
Maria Morales (Goya Windsurfing) did brilliantly to recover from a disappointing result in the single to climb back into fifth place from ninth as the young Spaniard advanced through five consecutive heats. Justyna Sniady (Flikka / North Sails) walks away from Pozo in sixth after suffering the narrowest of losses to Morales with just 0.04 of a point separating the two sailors in Heat 45.
Men
Philip Köster (Severne / Severne Sails) leaves the 2025 Gloria Windsurf World Cup in Gran Canaria with his eighth Pozo title, which is also his first 5-star World Tour victory since Sylt in 2022. The five-time world champion produced his usual polished sailing show, consisting of stalled double forwards, forward pushloops, and even a no-handed gozzo, defeating fierce competition from Marcilio Browne (Goya Windsurfing / MFC) in the Super Final. Köster also achieved the highest-scoring heat of the competition, 31.73 points. With his victory in Gran Canaria, Köster climbs to second in the world rankings.
Marcilio Browne pushed Köster all the way, but was unable to maintain his incredible winning streak, which had seen the Brazilian win the first three events of the season. Browne produced another world-class performance to secure a solid second-place finish, which keeps him in the lead in the world title race as we head to Tenerife for the next event. Browne also earned three perfect 10 scores during the event for radical double forward stalls and forward pushloops.
Last year’s champion, Marino Gil (JP / NeilPryde / MFC), rounded out the prestigious overall podium, marking his third consecutive top-three finish at his home event. Gil’s best finish of the season sees him rise to fourth in the overall world standings.
Young People and Masters
In addition to the pro fleets, eight other fleets ranging from the next generation (U13-U21) to the Masters division were in action, and all fleets put on some exciting action, but in the end, there could only be one winner in each division; siblings Alexia Kiefer Quintana (Duotone Windsurfing) and Carlos Kiefer Quintana (Duotone Windsurfing) won the U21 Girl and Boy categories respectively, Sol Degrieck and Javi Escribano (Goya Windsurfing / MFC) won the U18 Girl and Boy categories, Trine Gobisch (Duotone Windsurfing) and Yannik Kolb Gonzalez (F2 / Simmer Sails) took top spots in the U15 Girl and Boy categories, while Yannik’s brother Dennis Kolb Gonzalez managed to win the U13 Boy category. Meanwhile, reigning World Champion Mike Friedl (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing) took victory in the Masters division.

What’s next on the PWA World Tour?
The 37th edition of the PWA Grand Slam of Fuerteventura kicks off in a few days, taking place this year from July 18th to 27th. There will be plenty to feast your eyes on over the next 10 days in Fuerteventura, starting with the first Slalom X event of the year over the opening five days, before the Freestyle fleets take to the water for the first time this year.
