The battles for the Surf-Freestyle and FreeFly-Slalom world titles are set to step up a notch when the GWA Wingfoil World Cup Fuerteventura returns to the Spanish island for five days of intense competition.
The Surf-Freestyle tour reaches its third of five stops in Playa de Sotavento, where strong, reliable breezes will once again ensure exciting action at the 37th Fuerteventura World Cup.
The big surprises at the second stop of the Tarifa Wing-Pro made the title fights unpredictable. Denmark’s Benjamin Castenskiold, just 13, scored a stunning first victory in Tarifa, his second senior World Cup, while Spain’s Mar de Arce secured her first Surf-Freestyle victory, besting reigning world champion Nia Suardiaz.
Castenskiold will turn 14 in a few days and has earned the right to compete in the World Cups, taking a fourth podium finish at his first senior race in windy Leucate, France, in April.
The young Dane leads the standings heading to Fuerteventura, after two-time reigning world champion Chris MacDonald of the United States only managed to finish joint fifth in Tarifa, failing to reach the final.
