Sylt has again offered a mix of conditions over the last 10 days, with results in every category.
Sylt is renowned for its extraordinary variety of conditions, and the 2025 Citroën Windsurf World Cup Sylt certainly lived up to expectations, with light winds, marginal racing, epic freestyle conditions, and some of the most spectacular waves seen on the World Tour in a long time to round out the event. Over the past ten days, results were achieved in every category, with Johan Søe successfully defending his title in the men’s foil slalom, while 15-year-old Sol Degrieck (Severne Windsurfing) claimed his first World Cup victory, Yentel Caers (JP / NeilPryde) claimed his third freestyle world title, Lennart Neubauer (Starboard / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) won on Sylt for the second time in three years, and Marc Paré (Simmer / Simmer Sails / MFC) secured back-to-back wins, both on Sylt and on the World Tour.
Feminine wave
Sol Degrieck (Severne Windsurfing) delivered another outstanding performance on Sylt, as the budding young Belgian continues to improve. Degrieck was nearly eliminated from the semifinals, but delivered a buzzer-beater that allowed her to reach the final in the top four, making no mistakes in the final and taking her first World Tour victory at just 15 years old. The victory on Sylt means Degrieck is now part of a three-way race for the world title between herself, Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins), who will still lead the decider in Maui next week, and Alexia Kiefer Quintana (Duotone Windsurfing). Both Offringa and Kiefer Quintana were surprisingly eliminated in the semifinals, leaving the title race wide open.
Lina Erpenstein (Severne Windsurfing) also continues to make solid progress in her return from the Lisfranc injury she suffered earlier this year. The home favorite scored her first podium finish in only her second event since the injury and will undoubtedly be a major threat on the World Tour again next season, once she’s fully fit and confident.
Meanwhile, Justyna Sniady (Flikka / North Sails) overcame current world number 1 Sarah-Quita Offringa in the semifinals, the Pole managing to secure her first podium since 2022 with a combination of dynamic wave riding and damaging backloops.
Pauline Katz (Severne Windsurfing) stood out once again, but this time with her jump, with the Swiss earning the highest score of the competition for a perfectly executed backloop, taking home fourth place from Sylt.
Men
Wave
Marc Paré (Simmer / Simmer Sails / MFC) arrived early on Sylt to ensure he was prepared for whatever conditions awaited, and this meticulous preparation paid off, with Paré successfully defending his title and claiming back-to-back World Tour victories for the second time in his career. Paré’s latest victory means he will lead the world title race heading into the Aloha Classic, seeking his first world title. The 27-year-old earned the highest score of the event—9.5 points—for an incredible frontside air wave 360.
Philip Köster (Severne Windsurfing) failed to secure his third title on Sylt, despite winning the final, but his second place on Sylt allows him to earn a precious 8,500 points, which will keep him in contention for a sixth world title.
The other world title contender, Marcilio Browne (Goya Windsurfing / MFC), had to settle for a tied fifth place in Sylt, but he still has a solid chance of winning a fourth consecutive world title, given his prowess in Ho’okipa. The Aloha Classic promises to be a memorable showdown.
Miguel Chapuis (Flikka / North Sails) will remember this year’s event for the rest of his life: the Spaniard not only qualified for his first World Tour final, but went one better, also securing his first podium. Chapuis is becoming a real threat, and the 24-year-old will be one to watch next season.
Victor Fernandez (Duotone Windsurfing) shone once again when conditions became extremely difficult, leading the Spaniard to become the first man to book a spot in the final after completing a near-perfect double forward. Fernandez failed to repeat his feat in the final, but he leaves Sylt with another solid fourth place.
Dieter van der Eyken (Severne Windsurfing) shares a fifth-place tie with Browne, celebrating in Sylt after also finishing fifth in the freestyle event, once again demonstrating his talent as a sailor. Van der Eyken delivered one of the event’s most thrilling moments, executing a super-critical frontside wave 360 under a steeply raked lip.
The top ten is completed by Moritz Mauch (Simmer / Simmer Sails / MFC) and Alessio Stillrich (Bruch Boards / Bruch Sails), who share seventh place, while Morgan Noireaux (JP / NeilPryde / Black Project Fins), Julian Salmonn (Naish / Naish Sails), Marino Gil (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) and the German.
Slalom Foil
After taking a commanding victory last year, Johan Søe (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils) showed another display of racing prowess, winning four of the seven elimination races he completed, while finishing outside the top two only once. He also completed seven races last year, but this year he improved his score even further, finishing with a total of 4.7 points compared to 6.1 in 2024. Søe will look to defend his title in Japan in November, and given this latest performance, it’s hard to bet against him.
Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne Sails) was Søe’s closest rival, and after scoring three wins in four races (eliminations 2-5), the Italian was hot on Søe’s heels, but an eighth-place finish in the next race all but ended his hopes of victory. Iachino and Søe have shared the wins in the 10 eliminations completed so far this winter, so it will be interesting to see if either can consolidate their dominance in Japan. Second place in Sylt represents a strong result for Iachino, with his main rival for the world title, Pierre Mortefon (FMX Racing / NeilPryde), finishing fourth here. This means Iachino will arrive in Japan with a 300-point lead, aiming for a third world title.
Meanwhile, Maciek Rutkowski (JP / NeilPryde) has been sailing extremely consistently throughout the race and, besides Iachino and Søe, is the only sailor to boast a 100% qualifying record for the Winners’ Finals, which deservedly earns him his first foil slalom podium since 2023, while he is now firmly in contention for a spot on the overall podium in Japan in just over a month.
Amado Vrieswijk (Future Fly / Point-7 / Z Foils) and William Huppert (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils) took fifth and sixth place, respectively. Both sailed with great consistency, and neither finished lower than tenth in any of the seven heats.
After two quarterfinal eliminations in the first two races, John Soukos (WeOne / Challenger Sails) staged a phenomenal comeback. The young Greek qualified for his first Winners’ Final in Elimination 3 and from then on, it was as if a push had ignited in his head, also qualifying among the top eight in the next three eliminations, before finishing tenth in the final, achieving his first top-ten result on the World Tour: seventh place.
The top ten is completed by last year’s runner-up world champion, Daniele Benedetti (Duotone Windsurfing), who showed flashes of form with third and fourth place finishes in eliminations 4 and 6 to finish 8th, followed by Jordy Vonk (Duotone Windsurfing), 9th, and Fabian Wolf (Starboard / Severne Sails), who also achieved his first top ten result.
Freestyle
Yentel Caers (JP / NeilPryde) showed no signs of nerves in his pursuit of his third Freestyle World title, with the Belgian showing confidence and securing a spot in the Winners’ Final against Lennart Neubauer (Starboard / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins). With Caers’ main rival for the world title, Jacopo Testa (WeOne / GUNSAILS), and the seemingly unlikely, if not impossible, completion of a Double Elimination, Caers was able to enjoy the final without too much pressure. Caers tested Neubauer all the way in the Winners’ Final, but was unable to stop the 21-year-old from winning. But that didn’t matter, and Caers ultimately became the 2025 PWA Men’s Freestyle World Champion for the third time in his career, equaling Ricardo Campello’s tally.
Defending his world title was always going to be a distant prospect for Neubauer after his fifth-place finish in Fuerte, but the Greek finished the season in style. En route to his second win in three years in Sylt, Neubauer set his highest-ever heat score: 48.2 points against an unlucky Sam Esteve (JP/NeilPryde). Neubauer became the first World Tour sailor to achieve a triple crown in a race, while his overall performance was breathtaking, with a record 40 points across all four heats, and he will be a major threat again in 2026. The victory in Sylt means Neubauer finishes the season as runner-up in the world championship.
Steven Van Broeckhoven (WeOne / GUNSAILS) fought his way to the semifinals, but narrowly lost to eventual world champion Caers in the semifinals, before Testa redeemed himself in the last minute, denying him the win in the battle for third and fourth place. Van Broeckhoven finishes fourth in the 2025 overall standings, showing no signs of slowing down.
Elsewhere, Takuma Sugi (Tabou / GA Sails / Black Project Fins) leaves Sylt with his best Freestyle World Tour result yet—equal 5th—after producing some of his best freestyle results to date. The talented Japanese sailor shares fifth place with Dieter van der Eyken, also in excellent form, Balz Müller, and Youp Schmit (Flikka).
Thus concludes another epic year on Sylt, where this unique island continues to offer all kinds of conditions for an all-round test. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
