After numerous summer expeditions to the iconic mountains of Patagonia, Matteo Della Bordella – a member of the Ragni di Lecco and the Italian Academic Alpine Club (CAAI) – returns to the southern lands with an ambitious project: the first winter ascent of the Goretta Pillar on Fitz Roy (3,405 m).

From August 5th to September 10th, together with Tommaso Lamantia (CAAI Academician) and Marco Majori (Alpine soldier from the High Mountain Military Section), he will attempt a route that has already defined his career: the Casarotto. This important line, chosen not only for its technical merit, but also for the strong personal connection that ties Majori to Renato Casarotto, his father’s climbing partner.

“After so many summer climbs, it was almost natural to want to see these mountains in a completely different context. Winter is new territory for me, and it represents a real, authentic challenge. Fitz Roy in winter is a dream. Doing it on the Casarotto gives it a special meaning,” says Della Bordella.

At his side are two carefully chosen climbing partners. Lamantia, a previous climber of K2 and Cerro Torre, immediately demonstrated great motivation. Majori, with whom Matteo shared an expedition in Peru, is the perfect partner due to their closeness, determination, and shared values.

The undertaking enjoys the patronage of the Italian Alpine Club and the support of the Ragni di Lecco, a testament to the project’s importance and mountaineering value.

A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON THE SAME PEAKS
Braving winter on the world’s most challenging rock faces is an act of exploration, discovery, and vision. A return to Patagonia that isn’t a repeat, but a reinvention. A journey that reaffirms once again what mountaineering means today: exploring not just new mountains, but new ways of experiencing them.
